PROJECT RUNWAY 

The thirteen remaining designers were challenged with designing a look based on the hats of Philip Treacy. If you haven’t seen Treacy’s work, you should. These aren’t fedoras and pork pies. These are architectural art.

I’ve been a fan of the new hour and a half format but as the crew is whittled down, I wonder how they’ll continue to fill the time. They have started showing the designers as they sit back stage pondering their fates. This week, everyone was sure that resident cutie Christopher would be at the top with his gray and black print top and gray leggings.

Not such a perceptive bunch, these designers. Christopher was at the bottom. Heidi called it too dark; Michael Kors said it had no romance. Nina thought it was heavy. Brachel thought it sucked at being gay.

Oh, sorry about that; Big Brother flashback. Just one of the many risks I face recapping!

I continue to be at odds with the PR judges when it comes to the designs, but they seem to always agree with each other which means that either I know little about fashion or they’re all crazy (let’s go with the latter.) I stand by my opinion that fashion is objective as is taste. But I digress…

Michael C. and out Michael D. were in contention for the top spot. Michael C. designed something the other contestants considered ordinary and not very fashion forward (a glittery dress to compliment his red mask/hat) and Michael D. designed a cardboard-looking top and an orange skirt he crinkled himself.

I was sure Michael D. would win but it was not to be. Michael C. came out on top, much to the displeasure and shock of the other contestants.

The out-of-the-box award went to April, the just-out-of-school designer, who took a pointy striped hat and decided it needed a black vest and several layers of panties — black, pink, and white panties, to be exact. The top layer was a quilted number that looked like paper towels … or something even less appropriate.

The judges jumped all over her but I agreed with Heidi (finally!) that she stepped out of the norm and didn’t create another dress. The panty disaster did put her in the bottom two but it was Kristen with her amazing orchid hat and less-than-amazing black and pink dress who was sent packing.

The judges were surprisingly subdued this time around making me wonder what happened to my snarky judges? While they did refer to April’s outfit as her “triple panty problem,” that quilted mess was like being handed the golden ticket of jokes.
