Teachers across the district spent much of the past week preparing classrooms in advance of students arriving on campus for the new school year. Parents — often with students in tow — attended a whirlwind of orientation sessions late last week to meet teachers.

The message posted on marquees outside area schools informs everyone that Monday also means the start of the district’s new uniform dress code policy.

The full dress code policy is posted on the district website (sbac.edu) and school websites.

Students must wear shirts with a collar or school T-shirt of solid color along with solid color pants, shorts, shirts or skorts. Jeans are allowed as long as they are not embellished.

Diana Lagotic, the director of elementary curriculum in charge of drafting the new policy for the school system, said outside of first-time students to the district, there will be no grace period for the uniform policy. Students new to the district will have 10 days to comply with the uniform dress code.

“Since the policy was approved, we’ve answered 400 e-mails about the specifics of uniforms,” she said.

The Code of Student Conduct will be referred to when dealing with dress code violations. Lagotic said typically the process involves a phone call to parents asking for a change of clothes for students and reminding them of the policy.

The Alachua County School Board, in a 3-2 vote, passed the uniform dress code in June near the end of the 2009-10 school year. The decision sparked several weeks of student protests.

“We haven’t heard of any more protests,” Lagotic said. “I think everyone is getting ready to start the new year in uniforms and happy.”

Florida’s tax-free holiday on Aug. 14-15 helped boost traffic to area retailers like Target on Archer Road by those in search of supplies and clothing. Alden Kooken, store manager of Target, said he expects the shopping binge to continue over the next week.

“We get hit by both the public school students returning and then the University of Florida students looking for dorm supplies,” he said. “It will be a madhouse around here, especially after parents get the supply lists.”

Tari Kendall, along with her two children and a friend’s son, made quick progress shopping for supplies late last week. The only hard-to-find items were college-ruled composition books, she said.

“With so much online interaction with teachers, now they post the supply list on the website so you don’t have to wait until orientation so you can get a jump on the crowds,” she said.

Kendall, a Santa Fe College professor who also returns to class on Monday, said it helps that teachers specify exactly what they want students to purchase, which cuts down on decisions in the store.

And while supply shopping went well, eighth-grader Julia Kendall, 13, and younger brother Emmett Kendall, 11, both students at Howard Bishop Middle School, are not looking forward to the new dress code policy. For them it means giving up favorite T-shirts outside those with the school logo.

“I think if they had to wear closed-toe shoes like the elementary students, that would have been too far for them,” Kendall said.

Ring a ring o’ roses, a pocketful of poses. Many of you of a certain age remember the rest of the song. A song sung by so many children over the years as they played their games.

I watched some of the modern youngsters aged nine to 11 playing recently and there wasn’t a ring, a rose, or a pocket in sight as they were playing an altogether different game.

Girls in a bygone age played strange skipping games as they weaved their way nimbly between a twirling rope chanting mysterious words that had something to do with a big ship down an alley.

Other times the girls would be juggling tennis balls and throwing them against a wall as they chanted even more baffling incantations as the balls were thrown high in the air and manoeuvred underneath and between bare legs as the boys looked on in bewilderment and sniggered at the sight of a dress tucked into a girl’s knickers.

There was an even stranger game the girls played when they danced with joined hands around in a circle singing: “He is handsome, he is pretty” before making a beeline for one unfortunate boy and attempting to kiss him. Trouble was that the girls were bigger than the boys and we had to do as we were told!

Meanwhile the boys played a game called ‘walley’ that involved taking it in turns to kick a ball against a wall and whoever missed the wall was ‘out’ and so it went on until only the winner was left.

These were innocent pastimes to while away the long summer holidays and the games were handed down from father to son and mother to daughter.

There would be different variations to a game depending on what area you lived in.

Boys took great delight in ‘dipping’ in order to pick teams and a boy’s chant was very different from the girls.

It was more basic, darker with hints of menace, involving “catching an individual by the toe and if he squealed let him go”.

Or the time honoured “one potato, two potato, three potato four” and as each boy was ruled ‘out’ of the process he breathed a sigh of relief in the certain knowledge that it would be some other unfortunate, snotty-nosed, dirty-kneed, raggedy-bottomed individual who would have to start the chase to catch the others.

One of the cruellest games was ‘piggy in the middle’ where one person had to catch a ball thrown by two teams and was often made to feel as if the whole world was against them as their ‘friends’ laughed at their vain attempts grab the ball and make someone else be the ‘piggy’.

Occasionally boys and girls would play together in wide ranging games of hide and seek that would be played out up and down various entries – entries that in those days were not full of rubbish or gated as they are now.

We may not have had much money but we did have pride in our own entries and kept them clean.

These were all simple games. Games that involved the sing-song words of: “I draw a snake upon your back and who shall tick your finger?”

These were games that attracted lots of children and invariably ended in a mass chase, girls screaming, boys laughing and not a worried adult in sight.

The phrase ‘stranger danger’ hadn’t been invented and the kids looked after each other without causing undue hardship and misery to adults.

Of course the odd window pane got broken by a ball or a catapult firing marbles but nothing was done maliciously or to harm anybody else or their property. Indeed, if a window was broken then the child would be marched round to apologise and the parent would pay for the neighbour’s new glass.

Both children and parents had standards, accepting responsibility for their actions and those of their family.

So how do our old childhood games compare nowadays?

Well the game I observed recently by those cherubic nine to 11-year-olds was a new one. It involved grabbing handfuls of leaflets from display boxes in shop doorways and scattering them down the road.

There were no old fashioned chants such as above, just torrents of invective and four letter words at the shopkeepers who tried to admonish them.

And the finale to these kids games was to push a bicycle over, complete with shopping in front basket, and then leg it to whatever version of hell they call home.

Call me old fashioned – me who saw the Beatles and the Stones live in the Sixties, rode a Lambretta, wore a parka and went to all-nighters at the Twisted Wheel – but things were better when we were kids.

I’ve mostly come up with fashion history pages, which isn’t really what I’m looking for– and a lot of modern forum posts along the lines of “should brides wear white” which just started making me really mad, so I decided I’d better just come here. What I’m interested in is more an issue of social history or anecdote, I think.

The character in question, a woman of 23, is getting married in 1938. She’s been in a sexual relationship with her fiance for some time before they actually get married, and while they’ve been making an effort to be discreet and respectable about it anyone who knows them well at all could probably guess that neither of them is remotely virginal.

Now I know that around this time a white wedding dress had come to be associated with purity, even though that isn’t where the custom originated, so I’m wondering: would a woman in such a situation generally have worn white anyway to be tactful, even though many of the guests would know or suspect she wasn’t a virgin, or would it be considered better to be honest and wear a nonwhite dress? Might she be a little more subtle about it and forgo a veil instead, or fudge the issue by wearing a pale color? (I do know that colored wedding dresses came back in somewhat during the 1930s because of the Depression, but the woman in question is independently wealthy, so that isn’t necessarily an issue unless she chooses to take advantage of it.) How much about her sexual history would other people be likely to read into her decisions about dress color and whether to wear a veil?
