Never let your hair down.

That’s the belief fantasy hairstylists live by – and compete for – on “Hair Battle Spectacular,” a new reality competition debuting tonight at 10 on Oyxgen.

Set in Los Angeles, the show pits 10 extreme hairstylists against one another using a mix of real hair and extensions.

The prize? A cool $100,000.

Producers surely are hoping “Hair Battle” has the moxie to be the next “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” The seemingly strong cast of challengers include Fingaz, a dead ringer for Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes; Minista, a capable artist who has toured with Madonna; and Malibu, a former EMT and surfer who could be Barbie’s twin.

But the brilliance of the show belongs to whomever thought of putting a bar in the workroom.

“This is going to be a really fun salon,” understated one competitor.

Note to jealous self: Draft proposal for editors to consider a similar set-up by the copier.

But back to the show, which falls flat during the Glam Slam. Opponents pair off to battle their competing styles in a boxing ring. In the first episode, host Brooke Burns, sporting a morning-after-walk-of-shame hairstyle, takes center ring to separate a Hair Do from a Hair Don’t.

They come two-by-two before the judges, led by extreme hair expert Derek J, to hear the verdicts. The slow, tedious pace is matched by the ridiculous stare-down each pair performs in the ring. It kills any energy the live audience brought. The worst part is that the finished products are so artificial, there’s nary a strand of real hair in sight.

But Derek J., sporting dress shirts that are too tight and high heels, celebrates the fake, and likens the talent level to that of Olympic athletes.

Does “Hair Battle” have the potential to be a late-summer guilty pleasure reminiscent of early “Project Runway” days?

Let the hair games begin!
